Reishi Mushroom Extract

Ingredient Overview

Reishi, known as Lingzhi in China, has been used in Chinese and Japanese herbal traditions for over 2,000 years. Associated with the forests of East Asia, it is now widely cultivated for mushroom ingredients. Its firm, woody fruiting body is usually dried and prepared as a tea or extract.

Reishi contains several naturally occurring constituent groups. Polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, form part of the fungal material, while triterpenes provide another characteristic part of its chemistry. Research has explored these constituents in relation to immune function and antioxidant activity, although evidence for specific benefits in humans remains limited.

The fruiting-body extract offers a concentrated form of the mushroom for capsules and blended powders. It can also be explored in mushroom beverage concepts, where flavour and dispersibility are developed as part of the finished recipe.
