Ingredient Overview
Oat beta-glucan is a soluble fiber found in oat grain. This powder is offered primarily as a 70% beta-glucan grade; 20%, 80%, 90% and 98% grades are also listed. It gives food and supplement makers a concentrated oat-fiber ingredient rather than whole oat flour.
Oat beta-glucan has a mixed (1→3),(1→4) linkage. That makes it a different ingredient from the beta-glucans sourced from yeast or mushrooms, even when a label shows the same percentage. Specify the oat source and required grade when comparing quotations.
The powder can be evaluated in nutrition mixes, cereals, beverage mixes and dairy-style products. Hydration and final texture depend on the recipe and process, so the grade percentage alone does not predict how a finished drink or food will behave.
