Dong quai is the root of Angelica sinensis, a familiar ingredient in Chinese herbal traditions. It has an aromatic character, with ligustilide among the constituents used to describe its extracts.
The aromatic root provides a recognisable botanical character in traditional multi-herb combinations. Ligustilide is one constituent associated with that root chemistry.
