Ingredient Overview
Long pepper has elongated fruiting spikes and a long history in South Asian cooking and herbal traditions. It is a different pepper species from ordinary black pepper.
Long pepper extract is made from Piper longum fruit. The elongated fruiting structure distinguishes long pepper from the round fruits of black pepper. Both belong to familiar pepper traditions, but the species and harvested material are different. Piperine is among the constituents associated with concentrated long pepper ingredients.
